The budget of a regular indie film can range from a few thousand dollars to several million dollars, depending on the actors' salaries. However, the major distinction between indie films and traditional films boils down to the level of control that filmmakers have. With the latter, the filmmaker steers the reins of creativity, rather than a corporate board.

Many believe that the 1970s marked a golden age for American independent cinema, fueled by the counterculture movement and the success of low-budget hits like Easy Rider. The founding of the Sundance Institute by Robert Redford in 1981, along with the rise of indie distributors like Miramax in the 1980s, helped indie films reach a wider audience. Indie films often employ unconventional storytelling. Most films sponsored by big studios have a style guide and structure that they must follow. Indie films deviate from the traditional style guide, focusing on cinematography, open-ended conclusions, and non-linear plots. They commit to authenticity. Indie films aim to reflect real life rather than polished, fantasy-like stories. The acting may feel natural, and the stories do not always tie up neatly with a happy ending. Instead, they dive into the messy, uncertain, and profound parts of human experience. For many moviegoers, this authenticity is a refreshing alternative to the formulaic feel of many blockbuster films.

Instead, they focus on connecting with smaller, more specific audiences or people who share certain interests, values, or experiences. Independent films often act as cultural mirrors, capturing the hopes, fears, and changes of society in ways that mainstream movies sometimes shy away from.
